POOR MAVERICKS SLICED OPEN BY THE LANCERS (by Simon Marus)

Midweek Surrey Slam T20 cricket returned to South on Friday night as reigning South Champions, The Mavericks entertained a youthful Lancers. After being inserted on a good wicket, The Lancers got off to a quick start before JB had their opener brilliantly caught one handed by Smithy. Brownsey & Forbes then teed off with South not helping themselves by dropping simple catches from the former before he got to 15.
Lancers keep going at pace taking advantage of the lightning outfield and poor ground fielding with Farmer and Pollard adding quick runs. A total of 206-5 with Dylan picking up 2, Damo 1, JB 1 Alex 1 with Lewy bowling well but wicketless.

We needed to get off to a good start and we certainly did. The majestic Walker and brutal Smith took the game to the Lancers with Chris’s 52 retired off only 23 balls being reward for proper cricket shots all round the ground. Alex’s cameo 22 included a six that could well have made it Nutfield Marsh it went that far. 77-1 off 7 meant we were in the game and ahead of the as Ahson was joined by JB replacing the retired Walker.
JB didn’t last long, Glen went 2nd ball and Simon called for a suicidal single as poor Ahson was run out by around 12 yards.

Simon & Lewy tried hard but with the run rate rapidly increasing Lewy was caught and although Simon hit a few lusty blows, he was bowled for 33 off 24 balls and the game was long gone before Will was joined by the retuning Walker and run out.

Lingfield were a good side and good bunch who stayed for a couple of beers in the evening sun. Yes the Mavericks were weakened by the loss of key players but will have to play a whole lot better if they are to trouble Outwood Outlaws who visit on Wednesday evening.
