Anthony Smith's Debut Match Report

What fun last Saturday was? We arrived promptly at 12.10 pm and all preparations for the match were well advanced and things were looking good.

At 12.40 it began to rain; the cover was put over the wicket and the ends of the bowlers' run ups; and then it drizzled. And then it rained, drizzled and stopped. Three minutes later it started again. And then it drizzled and then it rained again.

The highlight of the afternoon came just after 2.00 pm when Sylvia and Trevor arrived with the tea (summoned early by our young, on the ball, skipper) and ten minutes later Capel were troughing first and enjoying well-filled home made sandwiches, (Coronation chicken proving to be the most popular) and fluffy scones with dollops of cream and jam - all washed down with a mug or two of strong builders' brew.

When S Nutfield troughed soon afterwards the skipper did have a word with his Grandmother about not producing his favourite pate sandwiches this week which most others thought was 'out of order'. Sylvia protested that she did not wish to seem to favour her grandson but remain impartial. The skipper reckoned that if the skipper couldn't be favoured in the sandwich department by his own Grandmother as tealady things were pretty bad.

Satisfyingly replete, with no prospect of anyone having to run around, with the rain still falling and tea finished,at 3.00 pm the two skippers shook hands and we all went home.

To think of it - it wasn't such a bad afternoon after all. Little controversy and 12 points each.
