The Stallions went into their final game of the season needing 8 points to be guaranteed the league title. That's according to Billy Saunders' maths, so it could be that we are in fact relegation candidates! Steve Gouldsborough picked a strong side to ensure the points came our way and then promptly ensured he was on holiday. Top captaincy that. The Gladiators were the home side and elected to bowl first. We'd have chosen to bat so it was a selection that suited us.
Jack Bellars and Courtenay Mills opened things up as usual and it wasn't long before Jack retired. Courtenay fell just three runs short of following Jack back into the hutch but fell to a pretty spectacular Ash Middleton diving catch. Billy Saunders added 10 before being comprehensively cleaned up.
In came Dylan Campbell who notched up 20 not out with his usual swing or miss tactics. He was accompanied at the crease by Joe Manktelow, making his debut for any SNCC side and his first ever indoor game. He didn't do too bad either, bagging a comfortable looking 21 not out.
David Bowen or BDB as he is affectionately known was our final bat, bagging 13 not out in what was an innings carved mostly from the edge of the bat. Jack returned for a final flurry at the end, being brought back to the crease due to the retiring Joe, but he could only add 4 runs before running himself out.
And so at the turn, the Stallions had amassed a more than useful 126-3 from their 12 overs without really ever breaking into a full gallop. Feeling comfortable with that total, Jack turned to BDB to open the bowling, a tactic he would surely not have employed had it been a tighter game.
BDB, however, was in rampant form, bagging a wicket in his first over with a genuine thin edge through to Courtenay behind the stumps. That was followed by a great opening debut over from Joe, who took his first wicket thanks to a decent catch from Dylan and then a sharp stumping from Courtenay to dismiss the ever-dangerous Ash Middleton.
BDB's second over was just bowling gold. Three wickets in the over, all catches taken by Jack. And that was that. The Gladiators all out for 21 and the Stallions bagging the 8 points required to claim the title. And if that isn't the case, then everyone can punch Billy Saunders in the face.
