SNCC 1st XI at Home vs Nutfield CC 1st XI

A local derby between South Nutfield 1st XI and Nutfield 1st XI always proves to be a spicy affair. Nutfield CC won the toss and elected to field first, hoping to restrict SNCC to a chase-able score on sticky pitch and slow outfield. Alex Smith (11) , fresh from a huge 150+ score the previous weekend, was the first wicket to fall with the score on 22. Jack Bellars (South Nutfield’s run machine) then combined well with Chris Walker to continue piling on the runs, before Chris (31) was caught with the score on 67. Young gun, Kyle Campbell, joined Jack at the crease and the two set about punishing the Nutfield bowling and putting on a decent partnership, before Kyle was trapped lbw, after reaching his 50, with the score on 200/3. This set the game up nicely for Fazzy to have a go in the last 4 overs, where Jack (125*) and Fazzy (19*) managed to complete the SNCC 1st XI innings on a whopping 259/3 off their 40 overs.
Up stepped SNCC’s bowlers to continue Nutfield’s woes, with the opening pair of Matthew Lewis and David Gentles keeping the Nutfield batsmen quite. With Matt Lewis (8-1-19-1) and Dave Gentles (8-4-17-4) completing their spells and destroying the Nutfield top order. Dylan Campbell bowled a tidy first spell before returning later to finish with decent figures (6-0-25-0), with another youngster, Joseph Quevedo, making his SNCC 1st XI debut, also returning respectable bowling figures (5-1-25-1). These two were shown the way at the other end by Prasad Singaraju who managed to get immense movement with the ball to totally destroy the Nutfield middle-lower order (8-3-23-3). With Fazzy coming on towards the end to finally dismiss the defiant No.5 batsman (3-1-6-1) ending Nutfield’s chase on 117/10 off 38 overs. Full 30 points bagged and on to next week with high expectations of the same. SNCC 1st XI are away to Oakwood Hill 1st XI on 26-Jun-21.

SNCC 2nd XI away vs Old Suttonians 1st XI

A struggling SNCC 2nd XI travelled away to take on Old Suttonians 1st XI who were just behind them on the Div 2 table, on the back of three straight defeats SNCC 2nd XI were desperate to reverse this trend. With SNCC 2nd XI struggling with consistencies in selection, due to injuries and availabilities, the side assembled and after winning the toss chose to field first to hopefully restrict the Old Sutts to a reachable target. Opening up with another promising youngster, William Jones, and our beloved veteran, Simon Marus. It wasn’t long before the breakthrough, with Simon smashing the stumps of the opener in his first over. Simon was bowled through and finished with very respectable figures of 8-0-29-1, with bowling shared at the other end by William Jones and another up and coming youngster, Robin Paulett who would both return later to make an impact on the game. On came the 2nd XI Captain, Damien Hutchinson and another 2nd XI veteran (in his SNCC debut season), Neil Billing. With a combination of tidy bowling and some brilliant catching (take a bow Neil, Ash, Leighton and yet another young U14 debutant, Freddie x2) the wickets were tumbling and Neil Billing (8-0-33-1) and Damo (6-0-38-4) had done their job. With the youngsters coming back in support to pick up some wickets and complete their spells, William Jones finishing with (8-0-40-3) and Robin Paulett with (6-0-32-1). A brilliant comeback by all to restrict Old Sutts to 180/10 off 36 overs. Not a bad result considering Old Sutts were 135/2, losing their last 8 wickets for 45 runs.
With the batsmen buoyed by the tremendous effort in the field Jim Paulett and Ash Mills (returning after a long rest) opened up the batting for SNCC. The two got SNCC off to a steady start before a tiring Jim Paulett was bowled (23). The in form Matt Wright did not last long (0), before Donovan and Ash again steadied the ship to leave a further 100+ runs required at drinks (20 overs). Ash Mills (36) departed too soon after the drinks break, with Leighton Jones (0), Donovan (7) and William Jones (0) following in quick succession. This left the Vice-captain (Simon Marus) and Captain (Damien Hutchinson) to dig deep and plunder over 75 runs off Old Sutts 5th & 6th bowlers, before the return of their opening bowlers to try and stem the tide. By this stage the target was in sight and the batsmen were well set, which enabled SNCC 2nd XI to canter home with 4 overs to spare - Simon (46) and Damo (52) finishing it off in style, much to the delight of the pad-rash triplets, Freddie, Robin and Neil. Mission accomplished and a full 30 points bagged, on to next week and hopefully better availabilities and COVID-19 jabs, headaches, manicures and haircuts a thing of the past. SNCC 2nd XI are at Home to Oakwood Hill 2nd XI on 26-Jun-21.

SNCC 3rd XI away vs Reigate Priory VI-Kings

The newly formed SNCC 3rd XI playing friendlies, made up of older juniors (U17’s), Dads’ of juniors, ex-players who fancied a game of cricket and 2nd XI players who weren’t selected for the 2nd XI but fancied a game – Nope, cancel that there aren’t any – assembled at Mynthurst to take on the established Reigate Priory VI team. The toss was won by Reigate Priory who didn’t hesitate to bat first. After meeting the first Reigate Priory player on loan to the 3rd XI (after a late drop out) the SNCC 3rd XI took to the field. Sticking with the ethos of giving everyone a game the bowlers took it in turns in 4 over bursts to try and restrict the RP batsmen to a score they could chase. The opening pair of Kieron Edwards and Simon Woodhead managing to not let the RP batsmen get off to a brisk start, with Kieron ending with figures of 8-1-24-1 after his two spells and Simon Woodhead as miserly as ever with 8-1-14-1. Jai Kamalludin and Liam Wainscoat also chipped in with tidy spells ending on 7-0-31-2 and 8-0-31-1 respectively. The fifth bowler pairing of Loic Woodhead and Duncan Mallison were wicketless off their shared spell, ending with figures of 3-0-21-0 and 4-0-30-0 respectively. With Lee Wainscoat also having a go (1-0-11-0) with ‘Unsure’ from RP bowling a tidy over at the end (1-0-4-0). Valiant effort from the bowling attack not letting the RP batsmen post a huge score and restricting them to 178/5 off their 40 overs.
A depleted SNCC 3rd XI batting line-up, robbed of their star batsmen from the previous week (on loan to the 2nd XI) tried a new opening batting pair of Iain Dewson and Ladies Captain, Charlotte Gouldsborough. The target of this week was to try and bat for the full 40 overs, a feat which has eluded the 3rd XI so far this season. The two got off to a slow and steady start, with survival being the key driver. The two openers battled manfully (or womanfully – or to be politically correct non-gender specifically) until Iain was bowled for 2 off 29 deliveries and Charlotte was caught for 8 off 22 deliveries, bringing young Toby Love to the crease who battled it out superbly with ‘Unsure’ from RP, making a bit of a recovery until ‘Unsure’ from RP was caught for a quick fire 18 off 12 deliveries. This brought Loic Woodhead to the crease to continue with Toby, the latter finally departed scoring a respectable 19 off 33 deliveries. Liam Wainscoat and Loic battled on with Loic eventually being bowled for 11 and Liam attempting to get on with it, being stumped for 8. Simon Woodhead was unfortunately run out for 0 and 3rd XI debutant Lee Wainscoat was eventually caught for a respectable 13. Duncan Mallison dug deep to try and prolong the game and reach the target of completing the 40 overs, but was bowled for 5. Unfortunately Kieron Edwards was trapped LBW for 0, leaving Jai Kamalludin on 0 as the not out batsman. SNCC 3rd XI eventually succumbing in the 36th over for 108, a valiant effort against a decent bowling attack on a tricky pitch. Next game against a team we beat at the beginning of the season (Salford 3rd XI) in the hope that we can repeat that performance and go one better, to finally bat out our full allotment of 40 overs. Great fun had by all and cricket the winner of the day, giving everyone an opportunity to play the longer format of the game. No game on 26-Jun-21 for the 3rd XI.
Sunday 20-Jun-21

SNCC Sunday XI vs Leigh CC Sunday XI – VCL

Leigh CC won the toss and elected to put SNCC in to bat first with the rain overnight expecting to make batting difficult. Matthew Lewis and Muhammad Fayyaz (aka Fazzy) took to the field and got SNCC off to a flying start with Matt being caught off a delivery that popped up off the pitch for 19 off 12 deliveries and the score on 30/1. This brought SNCC’s run machine, Jack Bellars to the crease who continued from where he left off the day before, dispatching the bowlers to all parts of the ground. Fazzy and Jack piled on the runs until Fazzy was caught for a respectable 73 off 62 deliveries – score 126/2. Jack was briefly supported by next batsman in, Sam Abellan who was bowled for 4 off 13 deliveries – score 139/3. This brought Dylan, the eldest of the Campbell brothers to the crease (brought in as a batsman for the day) to try and emulate what his little brother had done the previous day. Jack continued on in his usual way plundering the Leigh bowling attack, ably supported by Dylan. After some lusty blows by both batsmen, Dylan was eventually caught for 53 off 56 deliveries – score 254-4 with very few overs left. Damien Hutchinson joined Jack at the crease to finish off the 40 overs, with Jack finishing on 106* off 90 deliveries (back to back 100’s for Jack) and Damo 3 off 6 deliveries, SNCC ending on a mammoth 281/4.
Ex-Leigh players Poenie van der Merwe and Joe Harrington opened up the bowling for SNCC, with both picking up a wicket a-piece and dismissing the opening batsmen, ensuring Leigh did not get off to the start required when chasing down a huge score. Poenie being the first to finish his stint with figures of 5-0-16-1 and Joe being brought back later on to complete his allotment of overs with figures of 8-0-41-1. First change bowlers, Alex Smith and David Bowen, entered the attack with the former making an immediate impact with his shear pace, ending with miserly figures of 8-5-7-4 (more or less ending Leigh’s run chase), with big Dave ending wicketless on 8-1-33-0. With overs running out and loads of runs to get, Damien (6-2-20-0) and Sam Abellan (5-2-7-1) kept the dejected batsmen in check and Leigh finished well short of the target on 135-7 off their 40 overs, leaving SNCC Sundays XI undefeated for this season and well on track to finish on top of the VCL league. Tough game on 27-Jun-21 away at Ashtead for our Sunday XI….let’s hope this winning form continues.

SNCC Womens 1st XI vs Chertsey CC Womens 1st XI

South Nutfield Womens 1st XI went off to Merstham to play Chertsey’s newly formed Womens 1st XI in the Surrey Womens Cricket League – Division 2. The SNCC Womens XI batted first and ended on a respectable 187/8 off their 30 overs.

The SNCC Womens XI bowling was shared around with Tracey Edwards-Isard (6-0-29-2), Orla Chavasse (5-0-26-2) and Charlotte Gouldsborough (0.5-0-0-2) all picking up 2 wickets. SNCC Mavericks vs Outwood Outlaws – Mid-week Slam

Undefeated SNCC Mavericks hosted Outwood Outlaws in the second game between these two teams this season, with the Mavericks hoping to get the 2 points required to finish top of the group. After inspecting the pitch in the late afternoon the game was on, then off then on again with Alex quickly preparing another pitch that had not been as badly affected by all the rain that has fallen this month.
The Mavericks won the toss and elected to bowl first, with the opening pair of Alex Smith and Dylan Campbell not letting the Outlaws get off to quick start. Smithy bowling his usual miserly spell finishing with figures of 4-1-11-1 and Dylan coming back later and taking his wickets in his second spell, to finish on 4-0-21-2. Sam Abellan also chipping in with a wicket for his spells to end on 4-0-31-1. The Outlaws batsmen seemed to take a liking to Billy Saunders (2-0-28-0) and Joe Harrington (2-0-22-0), but the dependable Matthew Lewis proved to be the star of the show, ending with 4-0-24-4, with the bowling being supported by some good fielding, with catches being taken by Joe (2), Smithy (1) and Chris (1). Outlaws ending on a respectable 141/9 off their 20 overs.
The Mavericks response commenced with Chris Walker and Muhammed Fayyaz getting the Mavericks off to a decent start until Fazzy was bowled for 16 (off 11) – Score 17/1. Chris was soon to follow, caught for 1 (off 6) – leaving the Mavericks on 21/2 and Donovan King joining Michael Gibbens at the crease. These two consolidated and kept the Mavericks in touch, scoring at a fairly decent rate. Donovan King was the next batsman to depart, caught for 27 (off 22) and the score on 66/3. Billy Saunders did not hang around for long when he was bowled for 3 (off 3) – score 70/4. He was soon joined by Michael Gibbens who was run out for 17 (off 23), leaving the Maverick with a bit to do on 70/5. What followed was carnage, with Joe Harrington and Alex Smith taking the Outlaws bowling attack to pieces, resulting in the game being brought to a conclusion in 16 overs - Joe ending on 24 (off 12, including 3 sixes) and Alex on 45 (off 15, including 5 sixes and 2 fours) – Mavericks victorious with 144/5 off 16 overs.
Exciting game to watch and thoroughly enjoyed by all (except the Outlaws and their supporters). Onwards to the play-offs and a return fixture beckons against Hermes Redhill at Home on Wednesday 30-Jun-21.

South Nutfield Women’s Slam (the Maverchicks) vs Horley CC Ladies T20 (Hadadas) - Home

Women’s Slam returned to South Nutfield in the form of the 8-a-side 20 over game. After winning the toss and electing to bat, Horley Ladies were restricted to 94/7 off their allotted 20 overs, only one of their batspersons managing to get into double figures - with ‘Extras’ top scoring with a respectable 68. Pick of the bowlers was Ella Gouldsborough (4-0-12-3) who was supported by Gabriella Abellan (4-0-20-2), Megan Griffiths (3-0-17-1), Charlotte Gouldsborough (4-0-16-0) and Tracey Edwards-Isard (5-0-26-0).
This target did not prove to be a challenge for the South Nutfield Ladies’ batspersons, who managed to knock the runs off within 10.3 overs, with a score of 95/2. SNCC Ladies Captain leading the way with a superb knock of 35* (34 balls), supported by Ella Gouldsborough (7 off 11), Alex Wille (4 off 4), Gabriella Abellan who was there at the end scoring 9* (off 9 balls) and extras again top scoring with a valuable 40.

Chipstead won the toss, elected to field first and restricted SNCC U14’s to 102/6 off their 20 overs. This target was revised to 103 which increased the pressure on the Chipstead batspeople.
Chipstead U14’s got their chase off to a flyer but were pegged back by the fall of a few wickets, which meant that Chipstead U14’s had to take it to the 18th over to secure victory – eventually scoring 104/5 in 17.2 overs.
